Drawing from CNE’s Board Academy curriculum\, and feedback from our members\, this workshop will teach key roles and responsibilities of board members\, include interactive exercises for skills development\, and provide a unique networking opportunity for community members engaging in board service. \nTopics covered will include:\n– The unique role of the nonprofit sector\n– Characteristics of a high-impact board\n– Fiduciary duties of nonprofit boards\n– The board’s role in fundraising and community engagement\n– Board development as a strategic tool\n– The board/CEO partnership \nParticipants will leave the workshop with a new understanding of their role as board members and the path to a high-impact board\, as well as a toolkit of resource materials to take with them to the boardroom. This session is designed to make practical board training more readily available and to complement your organization’s own board orientation session or board education goals. New board members of area nonprofits are encouraged to attend\, as are more experienced board members who seek a refresher course to sharpen their board knowledge. Nonprofit leaders are also welcome; this is a great opportunity to engage your new board leadership! \nTEAM DISCOUNT!\nWe believe that nonprofit boards are strongest when they learn and strive for continuous improvement together. We are pleased to offer a 10% discount on the total registration cost for our Board Essentials workshop when 3 or more board members (or staff) from the same organization attend the training together. If you’d like to take advantage of this discount\, please contact Andrew Robinson\, Program Manager.

SUMMARY:Federal Contracting Assistance Programs
DESCRIPTION:To help provide a level playing field for all businesses\, the federal government limits competition – or sets aside – a certain percentage of contracts for (1) small businesses and (2) businesses in certain socio-economic or other categories.  These “small business set-asides” help qualified businesses to compete for and win contracts.\n \n\n\n\n\nTo compete for “set aside” contracts\, businesses must register in one of the SBA’s Contracting Assistance Programs. \nJoin our workshop and learn more about these Programs\, whether you qualify for participation\, and how to increase your chances of contracting success. \n  \n\n\nPrograms include:\n\n\n8(a) Business Development: The federal government tries to award at least five percent of all federal contracting dollars to small disadvantaged businesses each year.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHUBZone:  The federal government tries to award at least three percent of all federal prime contracting dollars to HUBZone-certified small businesses each year.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWomen-Owned Small Business:  The federal government tries to award at least five percent of all federal contracting dollars to women-owned small businesses each year.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nService-Disabled Veteran-Owned:  The federal government tries to award at least three percent of annual federal contracting dollars to service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER\nOnce registered\, you will receive a confirmation email from centeric@clients.virginiasbdc.org\, our automated system. This email will contain the ZOOM LINK to join the workshop.  If you cannot find the email\, please check your spam folder. \n\n\nJoin Lisa Wood of the Virginia Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC)\, for this informative presentation – a “must” for small businesses considering the Federal Government contracting market.  \nLisa is the Statewide Director of the Virginia PTAC\, hosted by George Mason University. Prior to that\, she served as the Statewide Director with the Connecticut and Ohio PTAC programs and was also Director for the Northwest Commission PTAC in Pennsylvania. Before joining the PTAC community\, Lisa was a Procurement Specialist for Bechtel Plant Machinery\, Inc. in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. In this role\, Wood performed contract administration and negotiation duties.
